Social Networking Law – El Othmani backtracking: The head of government, Saad Eddine El Othmani, has asked the Minister of Justice, Mohamed Benabdelkader, to withdraw Bill 22.20 on social networks, after the general outcry it caused in the civil and political spheres. The bill, dubbed the “Law of Muzzling of Voices”, met with rejection and protests from all human rights and civil society organisations, as well as leaders of the government majority. The daily Assabah reported in its Monday 4 May edition that party leaders strongly criticised the bill, which was approved at a meeting of the government council on 19 March. According to authorised sources, El Othmani has asked the justice minister to start talks with the CNDH, the CNP, the national press union and human rights and civil society organisations in order to revise all articles that could undermine freedom of expression and opinion.
